Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery is one of the greatest art museum in the world, в котором собраны лучшие произведения русской живописи, скульптуры и графики с XI века до наших дней (which house the best works of Russian paintings, sculptures and graphics from the 11th century to the present day). It bears the name of the merchant Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov, founder of the Gallery.

P. M. Tretyakov collected paintings from Russian artists for 36 years, а в 1892 году подарил свою коллекцию Москве (and in 1892, he donated his collection to the city of Moscow), because he wanted to create a national art museum, not only for professionals but also to educate the people. Это был первый в Российской империи музей, куда бедные люди могли ходить бесплатно (it was the first museum in the Russian Empire, that ordinary people could visit for free).

In the Tretyakov Gallery можно познакомиться со всеми периодами развития русского искусства (you can get to know all the periods of development of Russian art). Here you can see the works of famous Russian artists like K. P. Bryullov, A. A. Ivanov, P. A. Fedotov, V. G. Petrov, I. E. Repin, V. I. Surikov, and many others.

Bы можете многое узнать о традициях иконописи, увидеть всемирно известную икону “Троица”, которую написал А. Рублёв (you can learn about the traditions of icon paintings, and admire the world-famous icon of the “Trinity” represented by A. Rublev).

The aesthetic pleasure one might get from wandering through the different halls is completed with the better understanding of Russian culture and history.

The collection of art objects of the Tretyakov gallery are now on display in two buildings. One of them was built in 1900-1903 by architects V. Bashkirov and A. Kalmykov according to the plans of famous painter V.M. Vasnetsov, is located in Lavrushinsky Lane. Это инженерный корпус, где постоянно размещается выставка “Русская живопись XI— начала XX веках” (this is the engineering building where is housed the permanent exhibition of the “Russian Art 11th – early 20th century”).

In 1985, the Tretyakov gallery opened a branch in the Central House of Artists, on Krimsky Val. Here you can discover the works of Russian artists of the 20th century: primitive, abstract, futurist, etc. In particular, there is one of the of the painting of Kazimir Malevich’s series “Black Square”.

Until February 5, 2012, the museum presents “What is truth?” a series of paintings of Nikolai Ge to celebrate his 180 anniversary.
