Now that we are close from the end of the year and the Christmas festivities have begun, it is time for you to learn a traditional children New Year song “В лесу родилась ёлочка” (A Christmas tree was born in the forest). The song was first written as a poem by Raisa Kudasheva in 1903. It had 56 lines. An amateur composer, Leonid Karlovich Beckmann, decided to set it to music for his daughter in 1905. The song was then cut. This is the short version of this song, as you can listen to everywhere in Russia around Christmas.

A Christmas tree was born in the forest, |
Deep in the forest she grew. |
In winter and in summer, |
She was so slender and green. |
The blizzard hummed her a lullaby: |
|
“Sleep, little Christmas tree, sleep well!” |
She was dressed by the frozen snow: |
“Look, you won't freeze!” |
A trembling grey bunny |
Was leaping under her branches. |
And the hungry wolf passing on and on, |
In a hurry pace. |
|
Hark! The snow in the woods |
Is crunching under the sledge |
The horse with hairy legs |
Is rushing in a hurry. |
The horse was pulling a sledge |
With a man inside |
He cut down our Christmas tree |
Right to the roots. |
An now all decorated, |
She came to visit us, |
And brought lot and lot of delight |
To the children. |
A Christmas tree was born in the forest, |
Deep in the forest she grew. |
In winter and in summer, |
She was so slender and green. |
