How to Say “It’s Cool!” in Russian

If you’ve been in Russia, you probably heard young people using the word “круто!”. Let’s see how we use this expression:

• Если встретишь Ивана, не узнаешь: он стал таким крутым! Ездит на “Бэнтли”, ходит с телохранителями. (If you meet Ivan, you won’t recognise him: he became such a super cool guy!! He has a “Bentley” and bodyguards.)

• Он приехал на крутой тачке (машине); в нашем городе такую редко увидишь. (He arrived in such a cool car; We rarely see the kind in our city.)

• Круто было бы попасть на эту тусовку: там соберётся весь местный бомонд. (It would be cool to go to this party: all the local elite will be there.)

• Я видел тебя с твоей новой девушкой – круто смотритесь! (I saw you with your new girlfriend, you both look cool!)

• Нынешнего президента охраняют даже круче, чем предыдущего. (To protect the new president is even tougher than the previous one.)

• Тибальт – он всего лишь подкрученный дядька, а вот Ромео – крутой по-настоящему, почти как Брюс Ли. (Tybalt is just a hot-tempered guy, but Romeo, he is really super cool, just like Bruce Lee.)

The words “крутой” (cool), “крутизна” (cool attitude) combine a positive view of strength, determination, aggressiveness. Something like the American ideal of strength and good in a kind of hero-cowboy, whose individualism was attractive to us after years of collectivism. Such a hero is the opposite of a wimp. In comparison with the American version of a tough/tough guy.

Read now a fragment of an article from a Russian magazine called “Хочешь быть крутым? Будь!” (Want to be cool? Be!):

“Я хочу быть крутым меном (человеком). Не хочу быть просто интересным мужчиной, начитанным дядей, стильным молодым человеком. Так я решил и начал изучать, что такое “крутость”. Это форма и образ жизни. Не хобби, не маска и не имидж. Крутые люди живут и совершают крутые поступки, не задумываясь о том, как это выглядит. Быть уверенным в себе – ещё не значит быть крутым. Самоуверенным быть хорошо, но ещё круче быть крутым. Тот, кто реально крут, имеет право на ошибку.”

It’s not a hobby, not a mask, not an image. Cool people live and make cool things, without thinking about how it looks. Be confident in yourself doesn’t mean you are cool. Self-confidence is good, but to be cool is even better. Anyone who is really cool, has the right to be wrong.)
