The Verb “Talk” and its Prefixes

Verbs in Russian can have a different meaning, a more precise signification when a prefix is added. Not long ago we saw what can of prefixes could be use with the verb работать (to work). Let's have a look at another important verb: говорить (to talk).

Говорить/поговорить To talk С кем? О чём?
  • Маша хотела поговорить с преподавательницей об экзаменах. (Masha wanted to talk to her female teacher about the exams.)
 
Заговаривать/заговорить To engage a conversation С кем? О чём?
  • Лена часто заговаривает с незнакомыми людьми о своих проблемах. (Lena often engage a conversation with unknown people about her problems.)
 
Договаривать/договорить To finish saying something С кем? О чём? Что?
  • Он с трудном договорил последние слова своего речи. (He said the last words of his speech with difficulty.)
 
Разговор Conversation С кем? О чём?
  • Разговор - словесный обмен мнениями. (A conversation is a verbal exchange.)
 
Разговаривать To have a conversation С кем? О чём?
  • Я очень люблю разговаривать с друзьями о литературе. (I like very much to talk with my friends about literature.)
 
Уговоры Persuasion, entreaties, agreement
  • Несмотря на все уговоры друзей, он прощался с ними и отправлялся в путь. (Despite the entreaties of his friends, he said goodbye to them and hit the road.)
 
Уговаривать/уговорить To persuade Кого?
  • gt;Друзья уговорили меня пойти в театр. (My friends persuaded me to go to the theatre.)
 
Отговаривать/отговорить To dissuade Кого? О чего?
  • Мама отговаgt;ривала сына купить такую дорогую машину. (Mum dissuaded her son to buy such an expensive car.)
 
Переговоры Negotiations С кем? О чём?
  • Благодаря международным переговорам достигается взаимопонимание между странами . (International talk helps to get a better understanding between countries.)
 
Переговорить To speak with, to discuss С кем? О чём?
  • Вчера я пригласила его зайти ко мне и обо всем переговорить. (Yesterday I invited him to stop by and talk things over.)

Agreement, contract С кем? О чём?
  • Договор - письменное или устное соглашение. (It's a written or oral agreement.)
 
Договариваться/договориться To negotiate, to arrange С кем? О чём?
  • Мы договорились поехать в оперу на день рождения мамы. (We agreed to go to the theatre for our mum's birthday.)
 
Разговориться To talk, to have a conversation С кем? О чём?
  • Мы с ним разговорились после урока. (I got talking to him after class.)
 
Проговариваться/проговориться To let out a secret Кому? О чём?
  • Он готов был откусить себе язык из-за того, что проговорился. (He could have bitten off his tongue for having told his secret.)
 
Оговариваться/оговориться To agree, to stipulate
  • При каких условиях вы согласитесь? (On what condition will you agree?)
 
Наговориться To have a long talk
  • Мы с братом наговорились до отъезда. (We had a long talk with my brother before his departure.)
