We also use the dative to express the age of a person, an animal or a thing, to answer the question “Сколько вам лет?” (How old are you?) In that case this is the subject that takes the dative form:

• Сколько вам лет? – Мне 31 год. (How old are you? – I’m 31.)
• Сколько лет Антону? – Ему 40 лет. (How old is Anton? – He is 40.)
