This 1987 animation, directed by Валентин Караваев (Valentin Karavaev), presents a poetic adaptation of Иван Тургенев (Ivan Turgenev's) short story “Муму”, originally written in 1852.
Mumu is a simple et tragic story about a tyrannical landowner's wife (барыня) and Gerasim, a deaf and mute (глухонемой) peasant brought from the countryside to serve as caretaker on her estate. Gerasim's only friend is a dog he rescues from the river and names Mumu. The tale offers poignant portrayal of pre-revolutionary Russian landowners and their peasants.
