Travel has a long tradition in Russia. During the Soviet times, excursions were a way to educate Soviet citizens.
This poem “Весёлый турист” (Cheerful tourist) was written in 1989 by Sergey Mikhalkov.
Along steep mountain trails, |
Along fast and quiet rivers, |
Leaving big lakes aside |
| A guy walked cheerfully. |
He was 14 years old, |
And carried a small traveling bag, |
With a towel and a soap |
| And powder toothpaste. |
He wasn't afraid of nothing |
Neither snakes, nor bulls, nor dogs |
And if meeting them, he would laugh |
And said to himself: |
I left my tiny room, |
To happily take to the road |
To see everything, to know all wonders |
| And so I go by the country. |
He walked without a gun or a stick |
| Among the high green grass. |
Cuckoos and jackdaws flew |
| Above his head. |
And even the bully bulls |
| Mooed in a friendly way: "M-moo!" |
And even the chained dogs |
| Wagged their tails to him. |
He walked along trails and roads |
He met wolves and bears |
But the beasts did not touch him |
| And only uttered a growl. |
He heard the beast and the bird, |
| And climbed in thorny bushes. |
He touched wheat with his own hands, |
| And smelled wonderful flowers. |
And the clouds were his roof, |
And the thunder is alarm clock, |
And all he had seen and heard, |
| He wrote in his notebook. |
And to make it even more interesting |
And seemingly easier, |
He was singing a happy song |
| That helped him along the way. |
And all the windows opened wide, |
Hearing the song as he goes by, |
And everybody sang along with him |
| In the houses, the gardens, at the gates. |
And they slammed their doors happily, |
| And suddenly left their house. |
And the most ravenous beasts |
| Were nothing for them on the way. |
People went in great number, |
| And there were uncountable. |
Behind them on different roads |
A short song went: |
We are not afraid of the unknown, |
| We boldly go through the glaciers. |
With our cheerful song |
| Any climbing is easy. " |
And I heard this song, |
I recognised my friends' voices |
Went outside without a hat on |
| And caught up with this song. |
