About the Song
Learning Russian through songs is a great way to hear the language beyond the textbook - its rhythm, imagery and the way Russian words work together in context.
In this post we explore a song called “Это всё” (This is all) by ДДТ (DDT) - one of the most famous and successful rock band in Russia, founded by Юрий Шевчук (Yuri Shevchuk) in 1980. Recorded in the beginning of 1994, it became one of the songs the band's most recognizable songs.

Language Focus
Russian songs often use familiar words in ways that sound much more poetic than everyday speech.
Я прощаюсь с тобой - I say goodbye/farewell to you.
The verb "прощаться с" + instrumental means "to say goodbye/farewell to someone or something", e.g.:
Я прощаюсь с Москвой.
Мы попрощались с друзьями и поехали домой.
Пять минут до утра доживём - We'll live the 5 minutes until morning/ we'll make the 5 minutes until morning". In context, it carries the feeling of holding on and making it through.
The verb "дожить до" + genitive means "to live until; to make it to/until", e.g.:
Сегодня только понедельник, надо как-то дожить до пятницы.
Я хочу дожить до ста лет.
Это всё, что останется после меня - This is all that will remain after me/That's all I'll leave behind.
The verb "остаться после" + genitive means "to remain, to stay, to be left after someting", e.g.:
После пожара от дома ничего не осталось.
